October 22, 20244 min read

Packing right can make or break your safari experience. Here's our comprehensive guide based on years of guiding tourists through Sri Lanka's national parks.

Essential Clothing

  • Neutral colors — Khaki, olive, brown, and beige. Avoid bright colors that can startle wildlife
  • Long sleeves — Protection from sun and insects
  • Comfortable walking shoes — Closed-toe shoes are recommended
  • Hat and sunglasses — Essential for the tropical sun
  • Light rain jacket — Weather can change quickly

  • Camera Gear

  • DSLR or mirrorless camera — with a telephoto lens (200mm minimum, 400mm+ ideal)
  • Extra batteries — No charging points in the jeep
  • Memory cards — You'll take more photos than you think
  • Smartphone — Good enough for casual photos and videos

  • Other Essentials

  • Sunscreen — (SPF 50+)
  • Insect repellent
  • Reusable water bottle — (we provide water, but bring your own bottle)
  • Binoculars — A game-changer for bird watching
  • Snacks — Light snacks for energy during the safari
  • Medications — Any personal medications you need

  • What NOT to Bring

  • Drones (banned in all national parks)
  • Plastic bags (banned in Sri Lanka's national parks)
  • Strong perfumes or colognes
  • Loud speakers

  • Pro Tip

Wear layers! Mornings can be surprisingly cool, but by mid-morning the heat picks up. Being able to adjust is key to staying comfortable throughout your safari.
